World Swallowtail Day helps people of all ages and from all over the world to become more familiar with these amazing butterflies. By visiting them in their natural habitats, studying them in sustainably managed butterfly houses, botanical or zoological gardens, and learning more about them in the company of experts in universities, schools, museums and research centres, we are all able to contribute to a better future for swallowtails.

Monteserra Butterfly House will join the event by guiding visitors in the garden talking about local species and how to attract and feed them. Children will receive special drawings to colour prepared by the Swallowtail and Birdwing Butterfly Trust.

Etna riconosciuto Patrimonio dell’Umanita’

Il vulcano Etna è stato finalmente riconosciuto dall’Unesco quale Patrimonio dell’Umanità. In un momento in cui l’Etna sembra voler comunicare continuamente qualcosa, giunge la notizia attesa da mesi e frutto di un lavoro eccezionale da parte del Parco dell’Etna e sostenuto da Amici della Terra. Un grande successo che potrebbe portare all’auspicata valorizzazione di uno dei simboli più importanti della Sicilia e di cui dobbiamo essere tutti orgogliosi. Per la nuova presidente del Parco, Marisa Mazzaglia, si tratta di un impegno oneroso ma entusiasmante e che potrebbe aiutare l’ente a coinvolgere il territorio nelle varie iniziative in programma. L’area designata è circoscritta alla zona sommitale, già preservata e protetta, non vi saranno quindi ulteriori restrizioni o vincoli, dovremo tutti semplicemente imparare a rispettare e tutelare un bene comune e prezioso. Si auspica pertanto una partecipazione massiccia delle istituzioni e dei privati nella consapevolezza che tale riconoscimento può avere un effetto enorme sullo sviluppo e la promozione del nostro territorio all’insegna della sostenibilità ambientale.

Aurora dell’Etna (Anthocharis damone) is the italian name of the Eastern Orange tip, a very beautiful little butterfly whose survival is nowadays at risk due to the changes of its natural habitat. Its geographical range is very interesting as in Europe it is distributed only in Turkey, Greece, Macedonia and southern Italy (Mount Etna in Sicily and Aspromonte in Calabria). For this reason the species represent a real symbol of Mount Etna biodiversity.

The local group of the Friends of the Earth is carrying out a conservation project for the Eastern Orange tip since 2007. They aim to find out the butterfly’s main ecological requirements and the reasons of its population decrease in order to help the species to survive and become more widespread. A scientific research program is being held in Monte Serra Natural Park and other sites around Etna with the cooperation of Butterfly Arc staff from MontegrottoTerme (PD) and the Italian Union of Zoos and Aquariums.

Moreover, at Monteserra Butterfly House a new flight area has been recently built in order to carry out some of the technical phases of the project, as the breeding of the Eastern Orange Tip and the cultivation of its only food plant (Isatis tinctoria). The flight area will also host other Italian butterflies, typical of etnean environment and will be used as an extra educational exhibit for students and other visitors.

“Save Homerus” is a project aimed at the conservation of the Homerus (Pterorus homerus) a very rare and endangered butterfly from Giamaica. This project is managed and financed by the International Association of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers and Monteserra Butterfly House cooperates as a member in the fund raising.

“Ciao Farfalla” is the italian name of “Project Butterfly”, an International campaign promoted by the Friends of the Earth in all european countries since 1991. Our local group joins the project by carrying on studies on butterflies biology and their natural habitat in Monte Serra natural Park and by educating visitors about nature conservation.
